Clubs & Activities at Laurelhurst

LASER is committed to providing high quality and enriching clubs and activities. Our dedicated staff design the clubs and activities based on their area of expertise and interest of our students, focusing on the social, emotional, and educative outcomes of the program. In our activities we promote teamwork, problem solving, decision making, and critical thinking through fun and interactive ways and our goal is to engage and nurture all aspects of a child’s development. We strive to provide students with options to choose from and we celebrate diversity in our programs. We also work closely with the school teachers to align our activities with their instructional topics and curriculum.

Here is a list of clubs we are running in 2018-19 school year at LASER at Laurelhurst:

Cooking Club with Marisa

Our mission for Cooking Club at Laurelhurst is to try new things and make delicious treats in a clean, safe environment and having fun with our friends.  We aim to learn as much as we can about food safety to using measuring cups to tasting seasonal fruits and spices!

Cooking club is for all ages and we work in small groups on projects and activities.  So far, we've made a chocolate pudding pie, individual apple pies (where they got to experiment with different spices- we learned less is more) and shortbread cookie balls with cinnamon-orange icing.

Our format is designed to go in two-week segments.  Week 1 kids learn about an aspect of food safety and smell/taste/describe new fruits and spices, as in pomegranate and persimmon.  Week 2 is the baking project.  In order to bake in week 2, attendance is required week 1.  So far we've had about 25-30 kids per week.

Coming up for January we are taking a break from refined sugar and white flour and creating healthier treats.  Cooking club is Wednesday's at Laurelhurst from 4-4:45.
